Madara did eventually turn things around with the help of Hashirama. But things became twisted when Zetsu started to involve himself. Sasuke is/was a child, but he's completely consumed by revenge and constantly hungers for power. Hounded by a literal snakeman. Sasuke was left isolated and alone. Thanks to his brother, he is constantly reminded by his empty home what was taken from him.
